Court rejects man’s appeal in scheme targeting car dealers

CARSON CITY — A Bulgarian man has failed to get a new trial on his conviction related to swindling Las Vegas-area car dealers.

The U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday rejected the petition of Dragomir Taskov, who was sentenced in Las Vegas to 84 months in prison and to forfeit $159,742 gained through the scheme.

The appeals court denied arguments that he was not allowed to introduce newly discovered evidence at trial, that he was not allowed to change attorneys and that he didn’t get a speedy trial.

Taskov was accused of being a leader of a crime ring that used forged documents to buy expensive cars and then ship them out of state to be sold before the dealers learned of the scheme, which was carried out between 2004 and 2010, according to court records.

He was sentenced in 2012 on four counts involving mail fraud, receipt of stolen property and illegal transportation of stolen property across state lines, according to court records.
