Police body cameras help prosecutors, improve officer conduct

CARSON CITY — Body cameras worn by Metro Police officers are helping prosecutors get plea bargains and convictions and improving the conduct of officers, a Nevada Law Enforcement Summit was told today.

The cameras have exonerated 58 Metro officers of misconduct allegations and led to the firing of one officer, officials said.

Sgt. Peter Ferranti, who heads Metro’s camera unit, said the cameras improve the accuracy of officers’ written reports, and the District Attorney’s Office has been pleased with the program.

The Legislature set aside $1.5 million for body cameras for Nevada Highway Patrol troopers.

Patrol Capt. Natasha Koch said the agency wants to test different cameras, and its policies on body cams have to be adopted by July.

Laxalt said his office has been assigned to write the policies for the Highway Patrol.
