Careless smoking blamed in east-valley house fire

A family was displaced from their home on Wednesday after the east-valley house caught fire from a carelessly discarded cigarette.

Clark County Fire was dispatched at 8:35 p.m. to a single-story home at 4451 E. New York Ave., near Sahara Avenue and Lamb Boulevard. Firefighters arrived to find flames in the garage and attic area, Assistant Fire Chief Sandra Baker said.

Crews "quickly extinguished" the fire, and the family and one dog were evacuated without injuries. Baker said did not say how many family members reside in the home.

The fire caused about $50,000 in damage.

Fire investigators determined that the incident was accidental and caused by a carelessly discarded cigarette, Baker said.
