Police: Uber driver stabbed after making unscheduled pickup

Updated Friday, April 1, 2016 | 11:51 a.m.

An Uber driver was stabbed early this morning near the Golden Nugget in downtown Las Vegas after making an unscheduled pickup, according to Metro Police.

Officers responded about 2:15 a.m. to East Casino Center Boulevard and Carson Avenue.

A person pulled out a gun and demanded the driver’s wallet before stabbing him in the abdomen, police said. The victim suffered a nonlife-threatening injury, police said.

No arrests have been made.

The stabbing happened after the Uber driver picked up a person who was not scheduled for a ride, police said. Uber customers arrange rides through a phone app.

Taylor Patterson, a spokesperson for the ride-hailing company, confirmed that the driver was off the app at the time of the incident. Nevada law requires Uber drivers to be on the phone app to give rides.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured Uber partner and we have reached out to offer support," Patterson said. "We continue to gather facts and are working closely with law enforcement to provide assistance."
