East valley sinkhole traps SUV, diverts traffic

A family encountered an unusual road hazard in the east valley Monday when a hole opened in the street and partially swallowed their SUV.

Authorities say the 6-foot-wide, 6-foot-deep sinkhole — caused by a leaking water pipe — shut down a pair of residential streets after the single-car crash.

Police and the Las Vegas Valley Water District responded to the intersection of Ridgedale and Parkdale avenues, near Lamb Boulevard and Vegas Valley Drive, just after 12:30 p.m., Metro spokesman Larry Hadfield said.

Water district spokesman Corey Enus confirmed an SUV was partially submerged in the sinkhole and had to be removed via tow truck. A woman was driving the car with children in the backseat, he said.

No injuries were reported, but the intersection was closed and traffic was diverted, Enus said

Repairs were under way just after 5 p.m., as the water district investigated whether the leak was a result of a water main break. Enus said traffic would likely be diverted through Monday night.
