A plane sits damaged at the Furnace Creek Airport in Death Valley after it ran off a roadway due to mechanical problems on Wednesday, April 13, 2016.

A family of three was unharmed Wednesday morning when a small airplane they were in ran off a roadway at a Death Valley airport.

The incident happened about 10:45 a.m. at Furnace Creek Airport in Death Valley, about 140 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

The pilot said the Cessna 421 experienced mechanical issues, the National Park Service said in a news release. The plane was "heavily damaged" in the incident.

Park rangers responded to the crash and the airport was shut down while the wreckage was removed, the park service said.

An investigation will be conducted by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
