New Mexico State head coach Marvin Menzies watches from the sidelines during the first half of an NCAA basketball game against New Mexico on Sunday, Nov. 15, 2015, in Las Cruces, N.M.

Marvin Menzies’ contract to coach the UNLV basketball team was submitted today to the Nevada Board of Regents for approval on Friday.

It’s a five-year deal with $700,000 in guaranteed money in the initial three seasons and $800,000 in guarantees in the final two. Menzies can earn up to $200,000 in incentives for wins and ticket sales in the first three years of the deal and up to $250,000 in the final two years.

The regents will meet at 9 a.m. Friday at the Nevada System of Higher Education building on Maryland Parkway. Two weeks ago, they debated for more than two hours before a 9-4 vote to approve Chris Beard’s contract to coach the team. Beard left a week later for Texas Tech.

Beard was scheduled to make $900,000 guaranteed money in the first year, with increases annually up to $1.1 million in the fifth year. Menzies would be due to receive slightly less.

Menzies will be paid $350,000 in base pay from UNLV and $350,000 for media appearances in the first three years. In the final two years, that increases to $400,000 in both base pay and media.

If Menzies terminates the contract in the first year, there's a $500,000 penalty in addition to all of the remaining base pay. In year two, the penalty would be $250,000 and all of the remaining base pay. In the final three years, the buyout is his base salary.

Menzies, who spent the past nine seasons at New Mexico State, took to social media today with a message.

“In coming weeks, we will be working to build upon the legacy of the UNLV and the Runnin’ Rebels program, and it will take all of our dedication and your support to make our new UNLV basketball program ‘Marvelous,’” he wrote.

“The next chapter will allow us to continue our dedication to making sure our young men become mature prosperous adults and also making sure they graduate with the experiences of winning and teamwork that will last them a lifetime,” he wrote.

Menzies coached New Mexico State to five appearances in the NCAA Tournament and nearly 200 wins.
