Court to hear arguments on commerce tax referendum

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Supreme Court has set May 2 for oral arguments on a referendum to repeal a newly enacted commerce tax, which is estimated to impact some 300,000 businesses statewide.

All seven justices will sit on the case in Carson City on an appeal to block the referendum from appearing on the November ballot.

A group called the Coalition for Nevada’s Future filed a lawsuit, claiming the language in the referendum is defective. Attorneys for the group have argued the description on the referendum is invalid because it fails to inform voters that the measure, if passed, would imbalance the state budget.

A District Court ruled the petition was legal and could go forward. The coalition filed an appeal with the Supreme Court.

Backers of the petition to repeal the 2015 law must gather 55,235 signatures by June 21 to put the issue on the election ballot.
