Letter: Energy monopoly is an affront to voters

I sent the following email to Sen. Harry Reid:

Senator, as a 25-year resident and lifelong registered Democrat, I implore you to look into the Nevada PUC’s rulings against solar energy that clearly benefit only NV Energy and Warren Buffett.

This is an environmental and ethical issue. NV Energy made promises of rebates and encouraged customers to install solar on their homes. We did this 1) at the promise of rebates and lower energy costs, and 2) for the environment. My husband and I are senior citizens who need lower energy costs and want to help save the environment. We were stunned when the PUC voted and even held up its decision under an appeal.

Nevada could be the solar and wind capital of the U.S., if not the world. Instead, they have basically voted to end solar in Nevada, all to put money into the pocket of Uncle Buffy, who doesn’t even need the money. Did you know he also bought Timet in Henderson? Maybe next he will buy Southwest Gas and the water district to tie up all the Nevada utilities.

Is there no stopping this greedy money monger from taking over our lives and our constitutional right to freedom of choice? When will lawmakers stand up and protect their constituents and the environment, which is what they were hired (voted in) to do? When will they realize that NV Energy is a monopoly?

I would like a choice as to where to purchase my utilities, or at the very least, they should be real “public utilities” and make only enough to pay the bills. We cannot allow any big business or bank to take over products we need in daily life.

Oh, my! That sounds like a dictatorship, doesn’t it? Do your jobs and stop these money moguls from taking over our country and End Citizens United. Get the rich and big business out of our government and stand with the real people (the 99 percent)!
