Bishop Gorman Gaels Guard Christian Popoola Jr (22) drives against Coronado Cougars Trey Hurlburt (1) during the NIAA State Boys Championship Basketball game between the Bishop Gorman Gaels and the Coronado Cougars at Lawlor Events Center on the campus of UNR, Reno, Nevada.

Bishop Gorman High rising senior Christian Popoola Jr. took to Twitter tonight to announcement his verbal commitment to the BYU basketball program.

The 6-foot-4 guard, a consensus three-star recruit, averaged 13 points and five assists per game last season to help Gorman win its fifth straight state championship.

Popoola is familiar with the BYU program because he played as a sophomore at Utah’s Lone Peak High.

Rivals.com says he had scholarship offers from New Mexico, San Diego State, USC and others. It’s uncertain, though, if those schools were continuing to recruit him.

The fall signing period for basketball is in October.
