Police close activist’s case against Heck staffer

Metro Police are closing the case of an immigration activist who accused a Republican Senate candidate's staff member of assaulting her.

Viridiana Vidal of America's Voice filed a police report last month against Rep. Joe Heck staffer Keith Hughes, saying he pushed and pulled her outside a July 20 event hosted by the group Hispanics in Politics.

Immigration activists surrounded Heck's vehicle and chanted through a bullhorn as he left the breakfast meeting. Vidal says her leg was bruised in an encounter with Hughes while she was filming Heck.

Officer Michael Rodriguez said detectives interviewed witnesses and determined there wasn't sufficient evidence to pursue charges.

Heck's spokesman called the report frivolous. Vidal didn't have immediate comment Thursday.

Heck is in a heated Senate race with Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto.
