UNLV head football coach Tony Sanchez works with his players as practice begins during their fall camp on Friday, August 5, 2016.

The UNLV football program grabbed a verbal commitment this morning from a three-star wide receiver from Texas for its 2017 recruiting class.

Houston-area athlete Jaelon Darden (5-foot-10, 160-pounds) picked the Rebels over a handful of offers, including from Virginia Tech, Memphis and Southern Miss.

Darden played quarterback as a junior at Eisenhower High, earning first team all-district honors, according to recruiting service 247 Sports. His stats weren’t available. He's shown promise at wide receiver on the 7-on-7 circuit during the offseason, earning praise for his quickness and agility.

UNLV wide receiver coach Cedric Cormier is from Houston and has thrived in recruiting the area, including finding future standouts Tim Cornett and Devante Davis in the Lone Star state.

Darden surely follows suit.

National signing day, when Darden’s verbal commitment can become official, isn’t until February. Until then, he can be recruited by other programs.
