Olympic pride was in the air when officials at a museum in Las Vegas went fishing for names for three newly hatched banded bamboo sharks.
They came up with Phelps, King and Miller — after American gold medal swimmers Michael Phelps and Lilly King, and Las Vegas resident and bronze-medalist Cody Miller.
Las Vegas Natural History Museum spokesman Chris Palladino said Friday the names seemed natural for the first three hatchlings in a clutch of 24 fertilized shark eggs at the museum's marine exhibit. The names were first reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Banded bamboo sharks grow to about 3 feet long. Palladino says that when they grow, most will be sent to the Shark Reef aquarium exhibit at the Mandalay Bay resort on the Las Vegas Strip.
What names are up next?
Maybe Ledecky, Lochte, Murphy, Manuel, Dirado or Franklin.
Palladino says the museum hopes all 21 remaining eggs will hatch.
