The Nevada Commission on Judicial Selection has begun accepting applications to fill a position on the state Supreme Court left vacant by Justice Nancy Saitta's retirement.

The application process is open to all attorneys with 15 years of legal experience, including two years in Nevada. The submission deadline is Sept. 9.

The seven-member commission is charged with conducting background checks, interviews and sending three nominees to Gov. Brian Sandoval. The governor will then make the final choice on a replacement, who will serve out the rest of Saitta's term until 2019.

Saitta's retirement took effect earlier this month, marking the end of a 10-year career on the state's highest court.

The 65-year-old Saitta says she intends to continue working on juvenile advocacy issues. She previously was a Las Vegas municipal judge and a Clark County district judge.
