Law enforcement group opposing recreational marijuana

The Nevada Sheriffs’ and Chiefs’ Association announced today it is opposing a ballot measure to legalize recreational marijuana in Nevada.

The association, a nonprofit organization of law enforcement leaders, expressed concern that if the ballot measure, known as Question 2, passes, young people would more easily be able to get their hands on marijuana products. If approved, the ballot measure would allow anyone 21 or older to legally possess up to an ounce of marijuana.

Robert Roshak, the association’s executive director, said members also are concerned about a possible increase in fatal car crashes due to impaired drivers and a potential increase in organized crime and drug trafficking should recreational marijuana be legalized.

“We ask Nevada voters to vote ‘No on Question 2’ and join us in making public safety priority number one,” Roshak said in a statement.
