The UFC 202 public weigh-in carried the same feel of warring factions as the rest of the fight week events involving Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor.

The majority of the few thousand fans who showed up at the MGM Grand’s Marquee Ballroom for the proceedings ahead of tomorrow night’s pay-per-view were decked out in Irish flags or McGregor merchandise. A smaller contingent sported Diaz garb like Stockton, Calif., shirts and black flags, but they were no less rambunctious and pugnacious.

A few minor altercations broke out during the wait for the headliners, and McGregor didn’t ease the tensions with his final comments after completing the staredown photo with Diaz.

“He should’ve killed me when he had the chance because I’m back and I’m going to kill you and your whole (expletive) team,” McGregor said.

Diaz, who submitted McGregor in their first meeting in March, brushed off the remark.

“He’s already dead from the last time,” Diaz said. “It’s a new guy. It’s kill or be killed again. USA, (expletive).”

UFC President Dana White brought in reinforcements in the form of four police officers to keep Diaz and McGregor from getting close to each other during the traditional photo opportunity. After the commotion at Wednesday’s press conference, no one from either team was allowed at the weigh-in aside from registered cornermen.

Diaz looked, as expected, a fair bit larger than McGregor by the time of the public weigh-in at 4 p.m. But in the morning, he had only a 3-pound advantage.

Diaz’s official weight was 171 pounds, whereas McGregor tipped the scales at 168. Starting at UFC 200, the Nevada State Athletic Commission moved up weigh-in time eight hours to help with fighter safety.

The UFC has maintained its usual afternoon weigh-in event for fans and media, even though fighters are not actually weighed and their current weights are not revealed. Diaz could potentially have a near 30-pound advantage when the two enter the octagon at T-Mobile Arena Saturday night.

Diaz said two weeks ago his walking weight was near 200 pounds, meaning he could bulk up towards that before fight time. McGregor, the 145-pound champion, had to put on weight to fight at welterweight so he will likely go into the fight around the same size.

No fighters on the card missed weight, and there were no major incidents between them. Aside from Diaz and McGregor, White only had to actively separate Colby Covington and Max Griffin, welterweights who meet on the preliminary card.

McGregor attempted to get closer to jaw at Diaz, but was easily blocked. He asked to rematch Diaz at welterweight, so the size difference doesn’t bother him.

“He has this indestructible feeling like he can’t be knocked out, but he can,” McGregor said in a video that showed at the event. “And he will.”
