letters to the editor:

Gun lobby the only opponent of background checks

Recently, a number of Republican elected officials have announced their opposition to Question 1, which would require a criminal background check before anyone buys a gun in our state. Polls show that requiring background checks has more support than just about anything else in politics. It’s common sense to make sure that before we sell a gun, we find out if the person buying the gun is a felon, a fugitive or a domestic abuser.

The only opposition seems to be coming from the gun lobby, and the politicians and organizations who are in their pockets. We have a rare opportunity in Nevada to make our community safer without having to rely on politicians to do the right thing.

As a teacher in Clark County, I support this effort to make our schools and communities a safer place for children to learn and grow. I encourage all my fellow Nevadans to vote yes on Question 1.
