Trump campaign CEO faced domestic violence charge in 1996

Donald Trump's new campaign CEO faced domestic violence charges in the 1990s following an altercation with his then-wife. The charges were eventually dropped after she failed to appear for trial.

Stephen Bannon, the former head of Breitbart News, was charged in 1996 with misdemeanor witness intimidation, domestic violence with traumatic injury and battery, according to the City of Santa Monica, Calif.

A police report obtained by The Associated Press says that Bannon's then-wife claimed Bannon grabbed her wrist and "grabbed at" her neck during an altercation. When she tried to call 911, she told police that Bannon grabbed the phone and threw it across the room. An officer who responded reported seeing red marks on her wrist and neck.

The Trump campaign declined to comment. But Alexandra Preate, a spokeswoman for Bannon, said police never interviewed Bannon, who is on leave from the conservative news site Breitbart. She added that Bannon has a great relationship with his ex-wife and kids.

Trump's first campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, was also charged with misdemeanor battery last spring following an incident with a female reporter from Breitbart who had tried to ask Trump a question following an event. The charges were later dropped.
