Woman dies while snorkeling at Lake Mead

A 63-year-old woman died while snorkeling today at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

The Lake Mead communication center received a call about 1:40 p.m. that a woman was snorkeling in the Overton arm of Lake Mead and came up unconscious, officials said. She was not wearing a life jacket.

The woman was transported by boat, with CPR in progress, to Callville Bay, where she was met by medical personnel. She could not be revived and was pronounced dead at 2:36 p.m., officials said.

Officials believe the woman may have drowned.

The National Park Service, Nevada Department of Wildlife, Mercy Air and Callville Bay Resort and Marina responded to the scene.

The woman’s identity and the cause of death will be released by the Clark County Coroner’s Office. The incident remains under investigation.

The woman’s death is the second fatal incident this weekend at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. A 48-year-old off-duty police officer died in a diving incident Saturday afternoon.
