Letter to the editor:

Buy more products made in the US

On Aug. 14, during “The McLaughlin Group” broadcast, Eleanor Clift mentioned that electricians, plumbers and carpenters would remain working in the United States. This is true, but the products we are installing are inferior materials manufactured in China and other countries that have no quality or environmental-control regulations. When the product fails, you must replace it; therefore, consumer spend more.

Years ago, when these products were manufactured in the U.S., thanks to quality control regulations, they hardly ever had to be replaced. As a matter of fact, if you were a union contractor or electrician, you would only install devices and products “Made in America.” It made us proud as Americans to only install American-made products that supported our great country.

We must go back to those days and demand that all products be manufactured in the U.S. with American-made parts. American citizens are partially to blame for the job loss to foreign counties because we purchase foreign-made products since they are cheaper. If American citizens aren’t going to support our economy, who is? For example, Donald Trump has his shirts and ties manufactured in plants in Bangladesh, where the workers get paid 33 cents per hour. It’s all about greed.

I would not recommend a total boycott of foreign-made products, but buy products made in the U.S. when possible.
