letters to the editor:

Legalizing recreational pot would damage Nevada

Regarding the story “Is Big Marijuana calling the shots in Nevada?” (Las Vegas Sun, Aug. 9):

The moral and ethical decline of our great state is in the balance. To the Sun’s question, I answer no.

However, logic says that if Question 2 passes, the costs of the ensuing health and crime problems will outweigh the initial gains. Nevadans such as myself who oppose recreational pot use are dismayed at those prominent people and businesses who not only advocate recreational marijuana use but have business licenses or are connected to those selling this drug. And it is an illegal drug as classified by our government.

Sadly, it grieves me to say, one of my icons, Las Vegas Sun owner, Publisher and Editor Brian Greenspun of the illustrious, philanthropic Greenspun family, is such a one. He has an ownership interest in Essence Cannabis Dispensary, which sells marijuana.

I strongly urge Nevada voters, especially those with teenagers, to vote no to legalizing recreational pot use. For many users it will be an entry drug to more dangerous drugs.

All that glitters is not gold. If this bill passes, Nevada and Las Vegas will live to regret it!
