The first advertising shots are being fired in Nevada in the campaign for and against stricter gun-purchase background checks.
An ad that began airing this week is sponsored by the measure's supporters, Nevadans for Background Checks.
It features the president of the Nevada Association of Public Safety Officers saying Question 1 on the November ballot would reduce gun violence and save police officers' lives.
Jim Dunlap heads the union-affiliated association representing about 1,500 law enforcement officers in the state. He says the initiative would make it harder for criminals to get guns.
The National Rifle Association hasn't bought ads.
It opposes the initiative as an unnecessary restriction that would make criminals out of law-abiding gun owners.
The NRA position is backed by Gov. Brian Sandoval and most Nevada sheriffs.
