Mourners pay respects to ex-Providence mayor

Mourners for the second day in a row paid their respects to former Providence Mayor Buddy Cianci (see-AN'-see) at the building where he worked for more than 21 years.

Cianci died Jan. 28 at age 74. He was the city's longest-serving mayor, but was forced from office twice due to felonies.

Dozens of mourners formed a line Sunday afternoon around City Hall's second floor where Cianci's casket was adorned with sprays of red roses. Many crossed themselves and whispered prayers.

Officials at the wake's start Saturday included Democratic House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello and current Mayor Jorge Elorza.

Cianci's funeral will be held Monday at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul. Providence Roman Catholic Bishop Thomas Tobin will officiate.

Flags at state buildings will fly at half-staff through the funeral.
