Police: Suspect in bank robbery in custody after car crash

A person suspected of robbing a bank and crashing on a nearby freeway was taken into custody today in the west valley, according to Metro Police.

Police responded about 1:40 p.m. to a call from U.S. Bank, 3625 W. Russell Road, reporting a robbery, Officer Laura Meltzer said. The suspect escaped in a car, which was later spotted by a Metro air unit, she said.

The car crashed on the 215 Beltway between Durango Drive and Buffalo Road, Meltzer said. Officers were not chasing the car at the time, Meltzer said, and it was not clear what caused the wreck or if any other vehicles were involved.

The suspect was transported to University Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries before being taken to the Clark County Detention Center, Meltzer said. No additional information about the suspect was immediately available.

Traffic on the beltway was backed up for more than an hour following the crash. All lanes were reopened by 3:15 p.m.
