Police: Man in standoff in custody after stabbing police dog

A man was in custody today after stabbing a Metro Police dog during a 12-hour standoff near Maryland Parkway and Desert Inn Road, authorities said.

Police responded about 9 p.m. Thursday to a report of a disturbance at an apartment in the 1000 block of Dupont Boulevard, Officer Jesse Roybal said. Possible gunshots were heard coming from the apartment, he said.

SWAT negotiators contacted the man, but he “discontinued his communication with officers,” Roybal said.

Police this morning set a police dog loose on the man, who was bitten a number of times before he was taken into custody, Roybal said. He was taken to a hospital with unspecified injuries, he said. No additional information about the man was released.

The man stabbed the police dog a number of times, Roybal said. The dog was taken to an animal hospital and was undergoing surgery, he said.

An unknown number of people evacuated from their homes during the standoff were allowed to return about 10:30 a.m., Roybal said.

“In the case that this situation escalates, we don’t want anyone who might be innocent, any bystanders, to be injured as a result of that,” he said.

Sunny Luthi lives next door to the man. “He never spoke to anyone, she said. “He never introduced himself. He was real private.”
