UNLV 87, Colorado State 80

Game over

Jalen Poyser scored a career-high 19 points and UNLV grabbed an 87-80 victory against Colorado State with one of its most balanced, complete games of the season.

The undersized Rebels kept pace in the rebounding battle the entire game, forced 21 turnovers and hit 81 percent at the free-throw line until the final couple of minutes. And while UNLV wasn't great at the 3-point line (7-of-22) it hit key back-to-back 3s when Colorado State went to a zone defense, which kept the Rams at an arm's length long enough for the Rebels to improve to 15-11 overall and 6-8 in Mountain West play.

Pat McCaw led all scorers with 20 points, and he and Dwayne Morgan each had eight rebounds while Morgan chipped in 13 points, too. Ike Nwamu scored 14 points and Jerome Seagears rounded out UNLV's double-digit scorers with 11 points.

UNLV's defense was great for stretches and good enough to win pretty much the entire night. Those turnovers were huge as the Rebels turned them into 22 points and UNLV's defense never allowed Colorado sTate to get going beyond the arc.

The Rebels return to action Tuesday at Air Force. Check lasvegassun.com later tonight for a full report from the Rebels' victory.

With six games remaining in UNLV’s regular season, assistant coach Stacey Augmon went out of his way to make sure the university and the public knows that he wants to be UNLV’s next head coach.

Hours before UNLV’s home game against Colorado State, Augmon spoke to the Review-Journal to detail why he believes he should be considered for the job. Also, Augmon and former teammates Larry Johnson and Greg Anthony each vaguely hinted that they believe current interim coach Todd Simon stole the job.

This has been their belief dating back to Dave Rice’s firing, when Augmon’s wife, Leslye, sent out a couple of deleted tweets accusing Simon of being a snake. One of them read: “Stacey is getting f’’’”d just like the last time he was here. Todd Simon really? ?????? I am done #RebelFamily NOT”

This essentially follows up Augmon’s tweet from Martin Luther King Jr. Day, when he tweeted, “Coaching unlv matters I will talk soon,” and included a picture and quote from Dr. King. Augmon was not made available to media at that time or since.

So while Augmon makes his pitch for coach, the team that’s expected to play together will attempt to do what its coaching staff cannot and remain on the same page. The game against Colorado State tips off at 7 p.m. and will air on ESPNU.

Prediction: UNLV is a 6 1/2-point favorite, a line that makes no sense to me. Colorado State 79, UNLV 75
