Power restored for more than 5,000 homes in Laughlin

Updated Friday, Feb. 19, 2016 | 11:10 p.m.

A transformer fire knocked out power for several hours Friday night for about 5,000 homes in Laughlin.

The outage, which was reported at about 7 p.m. and resolved by 10:45 p.m., began when a transformer failed at the Big Bend substation at 450 W. Bruce Woodbury, NV Energy spokeswoman Jennifer Schuricht said.

Clark County firefighters responding to the plant encountered "heavy fire and smoke conditions" and extinguished the fire, Deputy Fire Chief John Steinbeck said.

There were no reports of injuries, he said.

Metro Police and Nevada Highway Patrol assisted with crowd and traffic control while the town was dark.

Metro Lt. Rick Given said Laughlin casinos used backup power generators to keep the properties running.

Clark County estimates that Laughlin's population is about 9,000.

The cause of the transformer failure is under investigation, Schuricht said.
