Pedestrian seriously injured, driver suspected of DUI in early morning accident

A 64-year-old pedestrian was seriously injured in a hit-and-run accident involving a driver suspected of a DUI early Sunday morning in the central valley, according to Metro Police.

Officers responded about 2:20 a.m. to the area of Charleston Boulevard, west of Maryland Parkway, police said.

The man was crossing Charleston Boulevard from south to the north outside of a marked crosswalk. As the pedestrian stepped off the median into the left travel lane on westbound Charleston Boulevard, a 2011 Hyundai Sonata struck him. He was transported to University Medical Center with serious injuries.

The driver of the Hyundai, 48-year-old Russell Robert of Las Vegas, did not stop and fled the scene, police said. A witness followed the Hyundai to the area of Cheyenne Avenue and Nellis Boulevard, where police stopped the vehicle.

The driver failed sobriety tests and was arrested for felony hit-and-run and suspicion of DUI.

This collision remains under investigation.
