CARSON CITY — Justice James Hardesty filed for re-election to a third six-year term on the Nevada Supreme Court Monday.

He was the first to file for the $170,000-a-year job.

Hardesty, 67, played a key role in 2014 in getting voters to create a Court of Appeals. That court, according to statistics, has lowered the caseload on the Supreme Court by 400 cases in its first year.

Hardesty is also chairing committees to tighten the laws on guardians and to modify laws on bail.

Prior to his election to the Supreme Court, he served as a district judge in Reno.
