Former Nebraska quarterback Johnny Stanton is expected to sign with the UNLV football team.

The UNLV football team’s likely starting quarterback next fall sure looks good on paper.

Johnny Stanton, who passed 3,168 yards and 25 touchdowns last fall for Saddleback College, today was named the California Community College Football Coaches Association’s Offensive Player of the Year. He was also named an all-American.

The 6-foot-3, 235-pound Stanton also rushed for 705 yards and 12 touchdowns in leading Saddleback to the California state championship game. He completed 63 percent of his passes and helped Saddleback win 10 straight before it lost in the finals to San Francisco City College.

Stanton was a four-star high school recruit in Southern California, but never materialized in two seasons at Nebraska. It appears he’ll get his chance to flourish at UNLV, which went 3-9 last fall in Tony Sanchez’s first season and lacked quarterback depth.

Stanton and eight others from the junior college ranks signed with UNLV in December.
