It’s 2016 and the ever-popular New Year’s resolution of losing weight is in top gear.

Starting a diet and commencing a new gym regimen are as much New Year’s tradition as the ball dropping in Times Square. But certain cities make it easier than others to keep a healthy lifestyle and lose weight.

According to a study by WalletHub that compared the 100 most populated cities in the United States, Henderson ranks ninth in the nation in best cities for an active lifestyle.

The study compares the cities based on 24 metrics that help residents stick to their health goals. These metrics range from average gym fees to the number of playgrounds per 100,000 people.

Henderson was given a score of 53.34 — less than three points off first place Scottsdale, Ariz.

The score is broken into two major groups: budget and participation rank, and sports facilities and outdoor environment rank.

The budget and participation rank is based on the average cost of physical activities such as gym memberships, bowling and tennis court rental, as well as the number of sporting goods stores and sports clubs in the city.

The sports facilities and outdoor environment uses the number of swimming pools, basketball and tennis courts, golf courses, baseball diamonds and other sports facilities per 100,000 people.

Henderson is ranked No. 1 in the country in basketball hoops per 100,000 people.

And while Henderson was the only Nevada city to break the top 10, Las Vegas wasn’t too far behind at 16th place. North Las Vegas, however, finished 96th.

So if you are planning on keeping that New Year’s resolution of maintaining a healthier lifestyle, the southern part of the valley will make things a little easier on you.
