Report: Nevada dead last among states for education

If Nevada were a student, it would rank worst in the class.

That’s according to an annual report released today by Education Week, which found Nevada performs worse than any other state when it comes to education.

Nevada performed significantly worse than the national average in areas like academic achievement, school finance and chance for success, a metric that measures “the role of education in a person’s life from cradle to career.”

The state earned a D grade overall, while the country as a whole earned a C.

In last year’s Quality Counts rankings, Nevada came in ahead of only Missouri.

The news is not much of a surprise for Nevada, which regularly performs at or near the bottom of national education rankings. Late last year, the release of the U.S. Department of Education’s national report card showed Nevada’s reading and math scores have largely remained stagnant or dropped slightly.

Some researchers have argued that sweeping national rankings often fail to account for the role a state’s demographics play in the scores.

A recent report by the Urban Institute found Nevada and other states with a large number of minority students have made big improvements compared to other parts of the country.
