Court rejects appeal in mail, wire fraud case

CARSON CITY — A federal appeals court today rejected the appeal of a Las Vegas man who bilked chronically ill patients out of an estimated $1 million with a promise to cure them with an unlicensed procedure.

Alfred T. Sapse was sentenced in September 2013 to 17 ½ years in prison after being convicted of mail and wire fraud. He was 87 years old at the time.

The U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals denied motions by Sapse that improper evidence was admitted at his trial in November 2012 in Las Vegas.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office introduced evidence at trial that Sapse had never been licensed to practice medicine in Nevada and that he advised seriously ill patients to undergo a procedure that was never approved by the Federal Food and Drug Administration, according to court records.

Sapse reportedly knew the procedure would not work and spent the proceeds on personal expenses and gambling, according to court records.
