Nevada inmate who escaped work camp is captured

A 34-year-old inmate who escaped from an eastern Nevada low-security work camp was captured Friday, a week after he was discovered missing, according to the Nevada Department of Corrections.

Sony Perez was found to be missing from the Pioche Conservation Camp about 5 p.m. Jan. 1, the corrections department said in a news release.

He was located Friday in an abandoned house in Pioche, and he was taken into custody by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department on a retake warrant, the corrections department said.

Officials originally believed he would head south on U.S. 93, and officers from the corrections department and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office searched for him, the release said.

Perez is serving two to five years for grand larceny of a motor vehicle, and he entered Department of Corrections custody from Clark County in October 21, 2014, the department said.

He will be returned to Department of Corrections custody, according to the agency.
