Teens’ concerns are nothing new

The “Where I Stand” column by Abner Fors (“Teens aren’t entitled; there’s a reason for apathy,” Las Vegas Sun, Dec. 2) was quite interesting and brought back many memories. As a senior citizen I vividly recall how it was common belief more than 50 years ago among all teens that parents did not realize all their children’s stresses: grades, looking for a job so as to be independent, trying to find oneself, etc.

In contrast, it was felt that parents had it made. They set up curfews, decided on what chores and allowances would be doled out and were quick to set up restrictions while they did whatever they wanted. They seemed to live rather relaxed, complacent lives, fully satisfied with doing their jobs and taking care of their families.

Well, in reality, parents did and still do have many stresses. Some are scarier than they were 50 years ago too. One of the biggest stresses is to successfully rear their children, whom they love dearly, to be well-rounded, productive adults who will make their own contributions toward creating an even better world.
