A 38-year-old man accused of shooting a Las Vegas police officer has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder, battery and weapon charges.
Teag Lanier Fox entered his plea Wednesday following his indictment Jan. 13 in the Dec. 17 shooting of Officer Gregory Sedminik, prosecutor Giancarlo Pesci said.
Fox's defense attorney, Kyle Cottner, said Friday there was a lot of work to do before trial, scheduled July 25. He didn't specify a defense.
"Any and all defenses will be investigated fully," Cottner said.
Fox was being held at the Clark County jail on $1 million bail. He could face decades in prison if he's convicted.
Pesci said Sedminik is recovering after surgery for wounds to his arm and upper torso. Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo had said the bullet that wounded Sedminik missed the officer's ballistic vest.
The shooting happened as Sedminik, 52, an 18-year police veteran, and another officer investigated an unrelated call about a domestic argument.
According to police, Fox twice asked Sedminik if he was there to kill him before pulling a gun and firing three shots. Police said Sedminik returned fire but missed.
Fox was arrested more than four hours later after an intense search of an area including high-rise apartments a little over three miles south of the Las Vegas Strip.
Police said it appeared that Fox eluded searchers by calling another man who was unaware of the shooting, telling him his car broke down, and asking him to drive him to the man's home in a golf course community several miles away. The driver wasn't charged with a crime.
Clark County District Court Judge William Kephart scheduled a June 22 status hearing in the case.
