Letter to the editor:

Ranchers receive many subsidies

Are you feeling so sad for those poor ranchers when they cry and moan about how mistreated they are? Do this: Goggle “federal subsidies to ranchers.” This will give you hours of unbiased information, unlike that given by politicians and the media.

The first thing you will learn is that the Government Accountability Office determined the Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service in 2004 spent $135.5 million on grazing programs. Receipts from ranchers were $17.5 million, costing taxpayers $115 million. This trend continues year after year. Ranchers pay one-third of the cost to graze on public lands as it would cost to graze on private land. You also will learn how much money is given directly to ranchers for various reasons, usually unjustified. For example, over $1 million was given to some Nevada ranchers for drought relief in years there was no drought. We should all get so much free money from the government.
