letters to the editor:

State of politics is a crying shame

I have been voting for more than 60 years and have never seen an election quite like this one.

I know that every four years the Republicans yell that they have all the answers and the Democrats yell back just as loudly that they are the ones with all the answers, and the electorate mostly gets it right. However, I have never seen such vitriol against a sitting president that every Republican candidate hurls at President Barack Obama, and he isn’t even running for re-election. They scream, “He is not a Christian but an Islamist,” “He’s coming to take away our guns,” and “He has ruined America and we want to make it great again.” They spew this hate against one of the most admired men in the world, who has brought this country back from the brink of a catastrophic depression. They say he hasn’t done anything to fix this country. I could list what he has done, but the list would be too long for this letter.

We have a candidate who says, “Make America great again,” and hasn’t a clue how this country operates. He has been compared to a fascist and has stirred up venom toward anyone who is not white and Christian. Then we have another man, who was not even born in this country, trying to destroy our Constitution by trying to make this a totally white, Christian country. He is disliked by all of his Senate colleagues but is loved by the extreme right.

On the Democrats’ side is a woman who is distrusted by many of the voters, as well as a Democratic socialist, whatever that is. As in so many elections, we vote for the person we think will do the least harm. I think the last president I actually voted for was John F. Kennedy, and look what happened there.

I don’t think I have ever been so frustrated or disappointed at the quality of the men and women running for the highest office in the land. I may have to hold my nose when I go into that voting booth.

God bless America!
