Gunman fatally shot by Washington, D.C., police officer

WASHINGTON — Authorities are identifying a man who they say was fatally shot by a Washington, D.C., transit police officer after he fired at officers.

D.C. police identified the man in a statement Wednesday as 21-year-old Sidney Washington Jr. of Washington.

Metro Transit Police officers were investigating a large crowd setting off fireworks near the Deanwood Metro station late Monday when police say they spotted Washington holding a weapon.

They identified themselves as officers and police say Washington fired multiple rounds at them. One officer returned fire, striking Washington, who later died at a hospital. D.C. police are investigating the shooting.

Police recovered his weapon. Authorities did not release the races of the people involved.

Metro spokeswoman Sherri Ly says the officer who returned fire is on routine administrative leave.
