high school football:

Texas coach on date with Gorman, ‘We’re going to go out and play for the state of Texas’

Bishop Gorman vs. Chandler 2

Steve Marcus

Bishop Gorman High School’s football team takes the field for a game against Chandler (Ariz.) High School at Bishop Gorman Saturday, Aug. 29, 2015. Bishop Gorman beat Chandler 35-14.

The Bishop Gorman High football team over the past two seasons has beat ranked opponents and notable programs, out-dueled top college prospects, won in the final minute, sent numerous players to major Division I programs and more.

So what’s left for the two-time defending mythical national champions?

Well, for all of the Gaels’ notable feats, there’s one thing missing: Beating a Texas opponent.

When Gorman was picked the past two seasons as the No. 1 team in USA Today’s final poll, critics in Texas were quick to respond. The Lone Star state is the mecca of high school football and movies are made to document its greatness, meaning Gorman still has one thing left to prove. It will get the chance at the end of August.

Gorman on Aug. 27 will play at Texas power Cedar Hill — another perennially ranked program with a similar share of bluechip recruits. And it’s safe to say Gorman has Cedar Hill’s full attention. Cedar Hill coach Joey McGuire made that clear this week in an interview with the Dallas Morning News.

“We're going to carry this Texas state flag and I'm proud to be a Texan and we're going to go out and play for the state of Texas,” he said. “Not just for the Cedar Hill Longhorns but for the state of Texas."

The Morning News is labeling the game as “one of the most-hyped high school football games in years.” Some expect more than 10,000 fans to attend.

“Our guys are fired up and ready to go,” Gorman coach Kenny Sanchez said in the spring. “We’ll be ready for that hostile crowd.”
