Hundreds of speeding tickets issued during special enforcement events

The Henderson Police Department and Nevada Highway Patrol stopped 638 motorists and handed out 430 speeding tickets from June 14 to 30 during a special enforcement initiative, authorities said.

Other citations included 40 for no insurance, 13 for running red lights and 15 for cell phone use, officials said.

A similar effort in North Las Vegas from June 17 to 27 resulted in 379 citations for speeding, 53 for no insurance, 41 for registration violations and 17 for cell phone use, North Las Vegas Police said.

The Henderson Police Department participated in the Joining Forces initiative to combat speeding, the department said. High speeds were the cause of five of six traffic fatalities in Henderson this year, police said.

These events are made possible by Joining Forces grants from the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety.

The grants provide funding for enforcement and education to reduce traffic deaths and injuries.
