Bench trial set for August in school cop cover-up case

A federal judge has scheduled an Aug. 8 bench trial for a suspended Las Vegas-area school police officer accused of attacking a student and a school staff member and trying to cover it up.

James Lescinsky is choosing to have his case heard by a judge, not a jury.

His lawyer, Jack Campbell, said Monday that U.S. District Judge Jennifer Dorsey cited scheduling conflicts in pushing the trial start date back from next week to Aug. 8.

Campbell says trial is expected to take four days.

Lescinsky is accused of striking the student and staff member with a police baton in May 2015 at a North Las Vegas high school for students assessed with behavior problems.

He's accused of lying by saying the student and staff member were wrestling.
