Resident arrested in Las Vegas group home fire; caregiver burned

A man was arrested in connection with a Wednesday morning fire at an east valley group home that left a woman in critical condition, according to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue officials.

The fire was reported about 5:45 a.m. at 1009 Marion Drive, near Washington Avenue and Nellis Boulevard, officials said.

Abebaw Kassa, 32, was booked at the Clark County Detention Center on a count of first-degree arson, jail logs show.

Authorities allege Kassa purposely started the blaze in the group home where he lived. Four other people were home at the time of the fire, and a 60-year-old caregiver suffered second- and third-degree burns to 75 percent of her body, officials said. She was in critical condition at University Medical Center.

Kassa also was treated at UMC for minor smoke inhalation, officials said. He remained jailed today on $20,000 bail.

A motive or details about how the blaze started were not released today.
