Taxable sales in Nevada up 1.6 percent in May

CARSON CITY — Taxable sales in Nevada, one indicator of the economy, inched up 1.6 percent in May compared to the same month a year ago, but there were major declines in some rural counties.

The state Department of Taxation reported sales reached $4.4 billion, with strong sales of furniture and automobiles.

Furniture sales were up 24.3 percent in May, while auto sales were up 9.4 percent. Clothing sales, however, were off 11 percent.

Sales in Clark County were up 0.5 percent to $3.2 billion, and Washoe County saw an 11.7 percent increase. But taxable sales fell 40.1 percent in Churchill County, 37.3 percent in White Pine County and 33.5 percent in Esmeralda County.
