After scorching week, temperatures starting to drop

After a week of scorching heat that saw a two-decade-old record fall, temperatures are starting to cool off, and Monday’s high should barely crack 100 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

The high today is forecast for 112 degrees but is expected to drop to 108 degrees Saturday, 104 on Sunday and 101 Monday, meteorologist John Salmen said. An excessive heat warning in place since Wednesday will expire at 8 p.m. today.

On Thursday, the mercury hit 115 degrees, breaking the old record for that date of 114 degrees set in 1995. And Wednesday’s high of 115 degrees tied a record set in July 1943.

The cool-down comes under cloudy skies, remnants of thunderstorms Thursday night that brought about .75 inches of rain to the Spring Mountains and up to .31 inches in parts of Henderson and Boulder City, Salmen said.

Partly cloudy skies are expected to linger through Thursday, with the chance of rain at 20 to 30 percent, Salmen said.
