Longtime Sun pressman Raymond Leland Calhoon dies at 73

Raymond Leland Calhoon, the patriarch of a family whose Southern Nevada roots date to the late 19th century and a longtime Las Vegas Sun pressman, died Monday, July 25, 2016, from complications of pneumonia. He was 73.

Calhoon worked for the Sun newspaper as a press operator from 1959 to 1990. He was a longtime member of the International Typographical Union Las Vegas Local 284C and served as its secretary-treasurer for a term in the 1980s. Several members of Calhoon’s family also worked for the Sun in the pressroom or mailroom.

Calhoon’s grandparents settled in Southern Nevada in 1899, six years prior to the downtown land auction that created the city of Las Vegas. A section of town once was called Calhoon Canyon.

Born May 14, 1943, in Las Vegas, Calhoon started working in the Sun’s mailroom at age 14. Two years later, he was promoted to operating the presses. Calhoon also worked part time as a deputy North Las Vegas constable in the 1970s. He was a member of the Elks Lodge.

Calhoon is survived by his wife of 54 years, Christine Calhoon; three daughters, Carrie Conlin, Donna Calhoon and Patricia Calhoon; two brothers, Clifford Calhoon and Kenneth Calhoon; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren, all of Las Vegas.

Services will be private.
