A Metro Police detective and crime scene analyst investigate a double shooting near Tonopah Drive and Washington Avenue Wednesday, June 1, 2016.

Two men are dead after an altercation led to a shooting Tuesday in the central valley.

According to Metro Police Lt. Dan McGrath:

After the shooting, the driver of a small white SUV, a 19-year-old man, waved people down near Washington Avenue and Tonopah Drive and asked for help about 2 p.m. He said that he and two passengers in his SUV had been in an altercation with another man at a convenience store about a mile away, at Martin Luther King Boulevard and Owens Avenue.

The shooter chased the SUV in a light blue or green sedan, then pulled up beside it while both were heading east on Washington and shot the two men in the head. Both men, described as Hispanic and in their mid-20s, were taken to University Medical Center.

One of the men died about an hour and a half after the shooting and the other died about 6 p.m.

It’s unknown what the argument was about. There was no indication anyone in the SUV fired a weapon, but investigators were waiting for a warrant to search the victims' vehicle.

Late Wednesday afternoon, there was no indication the victims were affiliated with any gangs, but investigators in Metro's gang unit were assisting homicide detectives.

A daycare sits near the scene of the shooting, which was not affected, but McGrath said it was worrisome a shooting took place on the street, in the middle of the day and with children present in the area.

"It got our attention," he said. "We don't have a lot of shootings and homicides in the middle of the day."

Onlookers at apartment units stood outside their homes overlooking the scene. A woman who appeared worried approached police and asked if a woman had been shot.
