New UFC Middleweight Champion Luke Rockhold

L.E. Baskow

New UFC Middleweight Champion Luke Rockhold collapses on the canvas after defeating Chris Weidman during the UFC 194 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Nothing impacts the mixed martial arts betting market quicker than the reveal of injury information.

Luke Rockhold provided a reminder on that lesson Thursday afternoon when he mentioned he had a torn MCL at a news conference. The middleweight champion went from as high as a minus-900 (risking $9 to win $1) favorite over Michael Bisping in the main event of UFC 199 — the card airs on pay-per-view at 7 p.m. following a preliminary card — to as low as minus-700 in the span of less than an hour.

Bettors felt more comfortable taking a shot at a high payout with Bisping with the knowledge that Rockhold isn’t fully healthy. The consensus price going into fight night lists Rockhold at minus-750 with the take back on Bisping at plus-500 (risking $1 to win $5), much lower than it’s been in the two weeks since the matchup was set.

It’s still a higher price than any other fight on the card, with the co-main event in second. Bettors wanting Dominick Cruz must lay minus-500, with rival Urijah Faber offered at plus-350 in their bantamweight championship bout.
