Oscar Goodman already has a restaurant bearing his name in downtown Las Vegas.

Soon, the former Las Vegas mayor may have a plaza named in his honor, too.

The Las Vegas City Council voted today in support of naming the outdoor space in front of the municipal building the “Oscar B. Goodman City Hall Plaza.”

His wife of 54 years — Carolyn Goodman, the current mayor of Las Vegas — abstained from the vote. Councilman Bob Beers voted no, citing his disapproval for naming anything after a living person.

The idea originated when members of the Commission for the Las Vegas Centennial sent a letter to the City Manager’s Office late last year. The letter, written by former U.S. Sen. and Nevada Gov. Richard Bryan, noted that Oscar Goodman’s three-term tenure resulted in “the most dramatic revitalization of the city’s history,” thanks to developments such as the Smith Center for Performing Arts and the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health.

“These developments have enhanced the quality of life for those who make Southern Nevada their home,” the letter states.

The former mob lawyer turned mayor did not attend the City Council meeting. Goodman, who was first elected in 1999 and made public appearances flanked by showgirls, was known for his big personality as much as his commitment to the city.

The plaza sits directly in front of City Hall, bound by Clark Avenue to the south, Main Street to the west and First Street to the east.
