Nevada jobless rate rises to 6.1 percent in May

CARSON CITY — While the national jobless rate declined, Nevada’s unemployment rate jumped to 6.1 percent in May, with an estimated 89,100 people out of work.

The national rate dipped from 5 percent in April to 4.7 percent in May. Nevada’s jobless rate rose from 5.8 percent in April to 6.1 percent in May.

Gov. Brian Sandoval said he was disappointed by the latest report, but Nevada’s “robust economic development efforts” would lead to an improved picture.

The Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reported the average weekly wage in May was $830. A total of 10,700 people filed first-time claims for unemployment benefits.
